(In its combination of traditional and contemporary values...)
In its combination of traditional and contemporary values, this is a good companion to two earlier poetry collections about farming in Kentucky: Jesse Stuart's Man With a Bull-Tongue Plow, first published in 1934, and Wendell Berry's Farming: A Handbook, first published 1967. Bailey's books shares many elements with these two classics, but its differences add a new dimension to the pastoral tradition in Appalachian poetry.
