Garrigou-Lagrange espoused and disseminated an orthodox, and what some would regard as an unbending, version of Thomism, with an occasional hint of Catholic apologetics. In this version °f Thomism, it is taken to be an Aristotelianism perfected, and even, for some, a perfected mode of philosophical thought; as if, in Thomism, a kind of Aristotelian finality had been realized. This rigidity was soon superseded by the genius of Maritam and Marechal. and by the innovative school of Louvain. None the less, Garrigou-Lagrange provided a clear, accessible and well-argued Thomism, and he is useful in establishing the orthodoxy against which subsequent developments must be measured. God. His Existence and His Nature (1915) is still a classic in twentieth-century philosophy of religion. However, few leading Thomists would now accept Garrigou-Lagrange’s version of Thoniism without considerable reservation.
