His most recent book is Slow Trains Overhead: Chicago Poems and Stories (2010). Lecturer in creative writing, Princeton University (Princeton, New Jersey), 1976-1980 Professor of English, Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois), 1981- Editor of TriQuarterly literary magazine, 1981-1997.

Gibbons has also published numerous essays and reviews, held Guggenheim and National Education Association fellowships in poetry, and has won the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, the Carl Sandburg Prize, the Folger Shakespeare Library"s 2004 O. B. Hardison, Junior. Prize, and other honors, among them the inclusion of his work in Best American and Pushcart Prize anthologies. His book, Creatures of a Day, was a finalist for the 2008 National Book Award for poetry. Company-founder and member of the board of directors, Guild Complex, since 1989.
