Career
Appointed, after an open competitive examination, to be a clerk in the Colonial Office, 1877. Assistant private secretary to East. of Kimberley, 1880-1882. Private secretary to 15th Earl of Derby, 1882-1885.
To Colonel Right Honourable F. A. Stanley, Member of Parliament (afterwards 16th Earl of Derby), 1885-1886.
To Earl Granville, 1886. Acted as Governor of Saint Helena, 1889-1890.
Assistant Under Secretary of State for the Colonies, 1898- 1909. Decorated for services in connection with the negotiations with France relating to West Africa, 1897-1898.
Crown Agent for the Colonies since 1909.
