Rena Small earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (1975) and a Master of Fine Arts in Art and Design from California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, California.
In the 1980s Rena Small was teaching at the School of Visual Arts Photography Department in New York City. She was a photographer in 1979 for the architectural journal VIA, Culture and the Social Vision, published by the University of Pennsylvania and MIT Press. In 1979 Rena Small also worked as a photographer for Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, publishers, in New York City, and in 1978 photographed "Grid House," an architectural façade project by artist Michael McDonough in Boston, Massachusetts.
