In 1944, deported with all other Crimean Tatars to Soviet Central Asia after they were accused by Stalin of collaborating with the Germans during World War II. Became one of the leaders of the movement which sought the restoration of the Tatars’ ancestral homeland, 1956. In 1967, member of the Tatar delegation received by Iurii Andropov. As a dissident, imprisoned 3 times: 1967, 1972 and 1979 in Krasnoiarsk and Norilsk labour camps.
For several years, tried unsuccessfully to obtain a visa for medical treatment in the USA. In 1987, one of the leaders of the 800-strong delegation which took Part in negotiations with Andrei Gromyko. Works in the construction industry. According to him, there are now one million people of Crimean Tatar origin in the Soviet Union, while up to 125,000 out of the 250,000 who were shipped east in railway trucks by Stalin’s NKVD died en route.
