(This analysis of 20th-century imperialism takes early mou...)
This analysis of 20th-century imperialism takes early mountaineering beyond the realm of recreation. It sets Halford Mackinder's 1899 climb of Mt Kenya and Annie Smith Peck's 1908 ascent of Huascaran in Bolivia, and John Baptiste Noel's filming of the 1924 British attempt on Mt Everest in the larger historical context of American and British foreign policy in the era of neo-imperialism.

Quotations:
"My primary interest is how humans interact with the natural world, responding to it, adapting to it, and often riding roughshod over it, constructing it within the framework of their limited cultural contexts."
"My interest in mountaineering literature comes from my love of the wilderness, particularly mountain places. My instinct that mountaineering, like virtually all cultural practices, is bound up in a complex network of political and ideological forces that make what most of us think of like a "sport." Indeed a much wealthier and more complicated experience that speaks to how we impact the natural world and interact with other people on a global scale."
