Reuven Kahane was born in 1931 raised in Kibbutz Ramat Yochanan. As a young man he became personally and professionally interested in radical youth movements and was the Youth Coordinator for HaNoar HaOved ve HaLomed), one of the key ideological youth movements in Israel. He obtained his BA and MA from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, studying with S. N. Eisenstadt. He subsequently completed his Ph.D. in sociology (on the higher education system in India and Indonesia) at the University of California, Berkeley, supervised by N. Smelser (1970). He took up a full time faculty position at the Hebrew University and taught there for thirty three years until his death in 2003, as Professor of Sociology, Professor of the Sociology of Education and Fellow of the Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace. Reuven Kahane worked tirelessly to promote the values of education and equality. His main contribution to sociology was in the field of informal education and youth culture. His theoretical work continues to provide the ideological and conceptual foundation for HaNoar HaOved, a progressive, pluralistic socialist youth movement in Israel with about 200,000 members (2020).
