Mr. Reid studied at Whitestown Seminary till 1875, Hamilton College till 1879 and Union Theological Seminary in N. Y. City till 1882.
Mr Reid started his career as missionary under Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions in Chefoo, Shantung, China in October 1882 and in Tsinan in 1885. He worked in region of China’s sages in 1885-1892. In 1892-1894 he had a furlough and in 1894 he resigned.
Then he started Mission Among Higher Classes, later in the International Institute in 1894. He was officially sanctioned by Government in 1897. In 1894-1897 he aided Chinese reform movement and in 1897-1899 he had a furlough again in the U.S.A. and Europe. He wounded Boxer Siege of Legations, Peking on July 5, 1900. Mr. Reid transferred Institute work in Shanghai in 1902. In 1910-1911 he had a furlough in the U.S.A. and Europe again.
He has written educational, social, religious, literary work of Institute in 1902-1921. Was the editor- proprietor Peking Post in 1917. By request of Peking Government (under pressure) he deported by U. S. Government to Manila, P. I., Christmas 1917. In 1918-1921 he had a furlough in the U.S.A. He also was the special correspondent in London Times in 1894-1895, in London Morning Post in 1900-1901 and finally in N.Y. Tribune in 1921.
Mr. Reid was married to S. B. Reynolds on December 1, 1897. He had a son: John Gilbert and a one daughter: Jean Reynolds.
