Rex Augustus Anderson was born on March 26, 1895, in Alturas, California, United States; son of Newspaper Publisher Clarence Walker Anderson. He grew up in northern California and went to high school in Roseville, California. He was trained as an accountant and served as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Rola Corporation at that time the largest manufacturer of Radio Speakers in the world. He resigned when Rola moved to Cleveland, Ohio from Oakland, California. He later served as the Secretary-Treasurer and Controller of LaVida Beverage Corporation in Fullerton, California. As World War II loomed he joined the US Government in Washington, DC. He attempted to join the Armed Forces but was declined due to age. Later in the war, he was an honorary general in TIIC in Germany. He retired from government service at the age of 67 and returned to his native California.
Education
Upon graduation from secondary school the United States entered World War I and Rex joined the US Army and was stationed in Tacoma, Washington, and Louisville, Kentucky. He was scheduled to transfer to Europe when the Armistice as signed. Following his service, he returned to California.
Religion
His Grandfather Colin Campbell Anderson was a Scottish Methodist minister but Rex rejected formal religion as a young adult. He was a member of a church choir until his thirties because he loved to sing.
Politics
He was a liberal democrat (small D) for most of his life but was apolitical while serving in the Federal Government.

He was a patriot yet he felt that the League of Nations and the United Nations would be the only way to achieve world peace as nativism and nationalism inevitably led to confrontation and to war.
