In 1957 Ricardo received Bachelor of Arts at Northwestern University. Then he became Doctor of Philosophy in comparative literature at Harvard University.
Since 1963 Ricardo works in Claremont McKenna College as an assistant professor, became associate professor beginning in 1963 till 1975, then he became a professor of English and comparative literature and chairperson of literature department in 1977-1980.
Then Ricardo was a visiting professor at City University of New York graduate center in 1970-1971, and later a visiting fellow at Villaci Tatti in Florence, Italy, in 1981.
