Chailly, Riccardo was born on February 20, 1953 in Milan. Son of Luciano and Anna Maria (Motta) Chailly.


Giuseppe Verdi and Perugia Conservatories and with Franco Caracciolo and Franco Ferrara.


Assistant to conductor La Scala, Milan, 1972—1974. Debut as conductor Chicago Opera, 1974, La Scala, 1978. British operatic debut Covent Garden, 1979.

British concert debut London Symphony Orchestra, Edinburgh Festival, 0197. Debut Metropolitan Opera, 1982.
