Chailly, Riccardo was born on February 20, 1953 in Milan. Son of Luciano and Anna Maria (Motta) Chailly.

Giuseppe Verdi and Perugia Conservatories and with Franco Caracciolo and Franco Ferrara.

Career

Assistant to conductor La Scala, Milan, 1972-1974. Debut as conductor with Chicago Opera, 1974, at La Scala, 1978. British operatic debut at Covent Garden, 1979.

Brit.concert debut London Symphony Orchestra, Edinburgh Festival, 1979. Metropolitan Opera debut, 1982. Engagements with major orchestras including Vienna andBerlin philharmonic orchestras, Concertgebouw, Orchestra de Paris, London Symphony Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, New York Phiharm.

Orchestra; conductor Salzburg Festival, 1984-1986. Principal guest conductor London Philharmonic, 1982-1985. Chief conductor Teatro Comunale, Bologna, Italy, 1986-1993.
