Mr. Tisci was born in Taranto, Puglia, Italy, on August 1, 1974. He has eight sisters.
At the age of 17, Riccardo Tisci left Italy to study fashion design at Central Saint Martins in London, from which he graduated in 1999.
In 1999, Mr. Tisci returned to his native country - where he worked for a number of brands including Antonio Berardi, Coccapani, Puma and Ruffo Research. In September 2004 he set up his eponymous label, showing his first collection in Milan for the autumn/winter 2005-2006 season. Shortly afterwards, in February 2005, he was made creative director at Givenchy, replacing Julien Macdonald. Since Hubert Givenchy retired in 1995, there have been numerous successors - John Galliano in January 1996, followed by Alexander McQueen in October 1996 - and then Julien Macdonald in March 2001. Riccardo Tisci admitted that he found the prospect of designing couture initially daunting. Since his appointment, the designer has helped the label boost its sales considerably.
In May 2008 he was appointed chief designer of menswear and menswear accessories in addition to his womenswear role. His menswear collections have received rampant critical acclaim and caused the formation of tribe-like followers. Mr. Tisci's apparent fascination with Gothic touches (dark, languid dresses for fall couture) and space-age minimalism (one ready-to-wear show featured white-clad models drifting around a sterile-white sphere) has drawn new attention to the Givenchy brand.
Riccardo Tisci caused a media stir in May 2010 when he cast the first transgender model in a catwalk show - the now well known Lea T. Lea worked as Riccardo Tisci's assistant before the designer asked her to walk in his show. In August 2011 he produced the album artwork for Jay-Z and Kanye West's collaborative album Watch The Throne.
Mr. Tisci’s creations found willing consumers immediately; the designer’s vision for Givenchy initially found traction with consumers rather than editors. In just two years Riccardo Tisci had revitalised the house’s couture business. He chose to stop showing couture in 2012, taking the business behind the scenes in-house once more.
In addition to his position at Givenchy, Riccardo Tisci has collaborated with the choreographers Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Damien Jalet on the costume design of the orchestral ballet Boléro by Maurice Ravel at the Opéra Garnier. Italian Model Mariacarla Boscono often appears in his runway shows and ad campaigns, owing possibly to the fact that he has had a friendship with her since before his days at Givenchy. In February 2012, Mr. Tisci collaborated with Madonna by designing her Super Bowl costume. Inspired by several of Mr. Tisci's archive Givenchy looks, the outfits - which were all changed on stage during Madonna's 12-minute set - included an all over hand-embroidered gold cape; a black mini dress worn with a hand-studded belt; and an embellished black coat.
In February 2017 Mr. Tisci stepped down as creative director of Givenchy. In March 2018, it was announced he had been appointed chief creative officer of Burberry, succeeding Christopher Bailey.

Quotations:
"Seduction is about intelligence and wit. Someone who makes me laugh has every chance to seduce me."
"Black is always elegant. It is the most complete colour in the whole world, made of all the colours in the palette."
"My definition of beauty is something between extremely ugly and extremely fantastic."
"I didn't want to dress anyone in the beginning, no celebrities. Then, very slowly I started with one, two, like that. There are some celebrities whom we dress because they are part of the family. They are women I admire. I don't care how famous she is, if she is at the movies or in a concert."
"For me, darkness is something very beautiful."
"Anything I do, I do with my heart. This is why I sometimes get very upset or sometimes get very personal when I'm working."
"To leave Italy at 17 without money and go to a country like England is very rare; Italians stay with the family until 30, 35. But I couldn't stand to live in this box anymore. I was getting bigger, and the box was getting smaller."
"I am very happy at Givenchy and it is a moment in which I am bringing the game to the next level. I feel at home. It's as if it were my son. I don't know how to explain it. It would be very difficult for me to leave."
"I’m very faithful to myself. When you do things that are true it just comes out quite instinctively."
"I like when a man has one strong accessory. If it's a watch, it has to be major. If you have strong shoes, it should just be the shoes. I don't like when a man is overdone-that's just bad taste. Coco Chanel was always saying you have to watch yourself in the mirror, put on a lot of things, and then take them off. I think it should be that way for men as well."
