BENNETT, Richard Bedford was born on July 3, 1870 in Hopewell, New Brunswick. E. s of Henry J. Bennett and Henrietta Stiles, 9th generation in America. Paternal ancestor first Anglo Saxon grantee present city New York, mother member Stiles family of Massachusetts (1636).

Studied at Public and High Schools, New Brunswick. Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Bachelor of Laws.
Career
Admitted Bar of New Brunswick, 1893. Commenced practice Chatham, New Brunswick. On incorporation of Chatham became member of first Council and represented town in municipal Council of Northumberland.
Resigned, 1896; removed to Calgary, Alberta, 1897. Member Legislative Assembly of North West Territories, 1898-1900. Re-elected to Territorial Legislature, 1901.
Took prominent part in opposing terms granted to new Province of Alberta under the Autonomy Act of 1905. Actively engaged in practice of profession. President Canadian Club at Calgary. King’s Counsel 1907; M.P.P.; Junior Member for Calgary in Legislative Assembly of Province of Alberta since 1909.
