2014"My influences may seem incongruent. On the one hand, I greatly admire Hemingway’s spareness and simplicity. And on the other I love the poetic, highvaulted prose of the nineteenth-century American and European writers, particularly Poe, Dreiser, and Bronte. My writing, however, is not a mix of the two. I write one way or another depending on the story. I am not very fond of more modern writers (perhaps, like wine, I only appreciate things once aged) although I admire some contemporary mystery writers."
"I began writing on paper, preferably with a fountain pen and black ink. Part of the joy of writing for me was in the actual mechanics of it, the feel of the pen against the paper, the flowing of the ink and the forming of the letters. I still write longhand when a good scene comes to my mind, and being on a train or some other place, have no other means to record it. But the majority of my writing is done at my computer. I generally try to write two good pages a day, and more on the weekends. My ideas come to me slowly, so I do not know what will happen ten pages ahead in my stories at any given moment. Having favorite books nearby is good for writing. As I write I frequently reach for them and read a few passages for inspiration."
