(A Behavioral Theory of the Firm" has become a classic wor...)
A Behavioral Theory of the Firm" has become a classic work in organizational theory, and is one of the most significant contributions to theory intended to improve the operation of the modern corporation. The authors use experiments and empirical observations to build their model of decision making. They reject the structure of the firm as represented by classical economic theory, instead they focus on the discretion of management. They also offer a new way of viewing the effects of organization, communications and individuals on the firm's overall activity. This is path breaking book and among the most important and provocative interpretations yet advanced for seeing inside the firm to understand it as an organization and an economic entity.

(The focus of this book is on the role of business firms i...)
The focus of this book is on the role of business firms in the resource allocation process. In any market economy in which decisions making is decentralized, the actions of business firms critically affect the welfare of the society. Business firms are both the major sources of employment and the major producers of goods and services in a market economy. In order to determine whether improvements are possible in the pattern of resource allocation, it is important for citizens to obtain an understanding of the impact of business decisions on the efficiency of an economy. This book aims at providing such an understanding in a technical and rigorous manner.

(This book is intended for use by natural resource manager...)
This book is intended for use by natural resource managers and scientists, and students in the fields of natural resource management, ecology, and conservation biology, who are confronted with complex and difficult decision making problems. The book takes readers through the process of developing a structured approach to decision making, by firstly deconstructing decisions into component parts, which are each fully analyzed and then reassembled to form a working decision model. The book integrates common-sense ideas about problem definitions, such as the need for decisions to be driven by explicit objectives, with sophisticated approaches for modeling decision influence and incorporating feedback from monitoring programs into decision making via adaptive management. Numerous worked examples are provided for illustration, along with detailed case studies illustrating the authors' experience in applying structured approaches. There is also a series of detailed technical appendices. An accompanying website provides computer code and data used in the worked examples. (This book outlines the creative process of making environ...)
This book outlines the creative process of making environmental management decisions using the approach called Structured Decision Making. It is a short introductory guide to this popular form of decision making and is aimed at environmental managers and scientists. This is a distinctly pragmatic label given to ways for helping individuals and groups think through tough multidimensional choices characterized by uncertain science, diverse stakeholders, and difficult tradeoffs. This is the everyday reality of environmental management, yet many important decisions currently are made on an ad hoc basis that lacks a solid value-based foundation, ignores key information, and results in selection of an inferior alternative. Making progress - in a way that is rigorous, inclusive, defensible and transparent - requires combining analytical methods drawn from the decision sciences and applied ecology with deliberative insights from cognitive psychology, facilitation and negotiation. The authors review key methods and discuss case-study examples based in their experiences in communities, boardrooms, and stakeholder meetings. The goal of this book is to lay out a compelling guide that will change how you think about making environmental decisions. My original interests were in oligopoly theory. I was interested, in particular, in seeing what statistical regularities in behaviour could be determined by statistical techniques. My first paper tested the hypothesis that oligopolists followed price changes during the up-swing, but not during the down-swing of a business cycle.
In trying to develop theoretical models of oligopoly behaviour, I got the idea that more knowledge was needed about the internal variables that affected decision-making within the firm. This idea developed because it
was clear that the market forces were not the determinate factors. This interest then led to learning more about organisation theory and doing some specific empirical studies of decisionmaking within oligopolistic firms.
Ultimately, this work led to the writing of A Behavioral Theory of the Firm. This book has been classified as a citation classic because of the large number of times it has been cited. This book was written with James G. March and has had a wide impact in a number of the social sciences.
In the course of attempting to develop more complex models that could encompass some of the knowledge about behaviour that had been learned from the empirical studies, I became interested in simulation.
An article by Kalman Cohen and myself in the 1961 Quarterly Journal of Economics was, so far as I know, the first article on the possibilities of simulation for developing dynamic economic models. I became somewhat discouraged about simulation models because I believe they were describing but not explaining. In the search for new methodologies for model building, I became interested in Bayesian analysis.
Together with M. DeGroot, I have over the last fifteen years been applying Bayesian analysis to economic theory. In this process, we have made a large number of contributions to oligopoly theory. This work will be forthcoming shortly in book form.
We have been able to develop models with utility functions that incorporate learning about utilities on the part of the individual.
