Richard Davies was born in north Wales in circa 1505.
Richard Davies was educated at New Inn Hall in Oxford.
In 1550 Davies became the vicar of Burnham, Buckinghamshire. He was on close terms with Matthew Parker, archbishop of Canterbury, and William Cecil, Lord Burghley, advising them on Welsh matters.
Davies collaborated closely with William Salesbury in producing the Welsh translation of the New Testament in 1567, parts of which he contributed. But a quarrel between them seems to have left the Old Testament to be translated by William Morgan.
Davies took part in translating the New Testament into Welsh, and also did some work on the Welsh translation of the Book of Common Prayer. He helped to revise the Bishops' Bible of 1568, being himself responsible for the book of Deuteronomy, and the second book of Samuel.
