Davis was born on June 21, 1924 in Moose Lake, Minnesota, United States; the son of Hollie McVay Davis and Annamarie (Schweitzer) Davis.
Davis received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ohio State University in 1947. A year later he earned his Master of Arts degree and a Doctor of Education degree in 1962 from the University of Michigan.
Davis served in the United States Army Air Force from 1943 to 1945. He began his career as an instructor at General Motors Institute of Technology (nowadays Kettering University) in 1948. Three years later he took a position of a systems analyst at Ford Motor Company and at General Motors Corporation in 1953. Then in 1955, Richard became an administrative analyst at Champion Spark Plug Company, where he worked until 1957.
In 1962, he was appointed a professor of English in the department of humanities at School of Engineering of Air Force Institute of Technology. Since 1979 Richard was a professor of English and head of the department of communications and research methods at School of Systems and Logistics of the same institute.
On May 30, 1956 Richard Davis married Florence Lita Gianotti. They have four children.
