Richard Engel was born on the 16th of September, 1973 in New York City, New York, United States. His father’s name is Peter and mother is Nina. His father was involved in a profession of financier and his mother had an antique shop. He was fostered in a beautiful place named Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City. His childhood was pretty much enjoyable for him.

Richard Engel decided to move to Cairo, Egypt and make a name for himself there as a journalist. Engel realized that the Middle East held the best opportunities for a young freelancer, and he soon found work as a radio reporter. He worked as a freelance reporter for more than four years.
With an eye on the coming war between the United States and Iraq, he managed to travel into Baghdad, and he was broadcasting from that city when the war began. At the beginning Engel stayed in Baghdad as a freelance journalist, but when he proved courageous and able to keep in contact with Iraqi citizens, he was hired by ABC in 2002-03. By that time, he was the only American broadcast journalist still in Iraq who was not “embedded” with American troops.
Engel also worked as a news reporter for ‘USA Today’. At the same time, Richard served as a freelance journalist for ABC News. While working there, he masterminded on covering the news of the Iraq war that was at the time an international matter of concern. As a result, his dedication and hard work paid off as he became the Senior Middle East correspondent on the popular news channel, NBC News.
Subsequently, Richard covered much news during 2006 Israeli-Hezbollah conflict preparing many reports as a Senior Middle East Correspondent and Beirut Bureau Chief. Later on, after working for more than two years as Senior Middle East Correspondent, he secured promotion as Chief Foreign Correspondent in NBC News in 2008. Furthermore, he covered the news of the presidential election at Kabul, Afghanistan in the year 2009. Due to his risky and life-threatening job, he nearly died when he was covering the news of the Libyan Civil War.
Engel reported, at times through tear gas, on the Egyptian revolution in 2011. In 2012 Engel covered the Israel-Gaza conflict and the political transition of Egypt following the election of President Mohamed Morsi.
Currently, Engel hosts the occasional MSNBC Special Series “On Assignment with Richard Engel”.
Engel's book “A Fist in the Hornet's Nest: On the Ground in Baghdad before, during, and after the War” was published in 2004, the book describes the daily lives of Iraqis prior to the conflict and their mixed emotions about the U.S. takeover. He also wrote "War Journal: My Five Years in Iraq" in 2008 and "And Then All Hell Broke Loose: Two Decades in the Middle East" in 2016.
