He was on the anaesthetics registrar at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. In 1969, he was elected to the Australian House of Representatives as the Labor member for Kingston, defeating Liberal Member of Parliament Kay Brownbill. He held the seat until 1975, when he was defeated by Liberal challenger Grant Chapman.
He attempted to vanquish Chapman and retake his seat at the next two elections, coming up short each time.
