He was stationed aboard the United States Ship Nipsic (1863) as a quartermaster when, on March 16, 1889 a hurricane overwhelmed the ship while it was moored in Apia, Samoa. He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery Brighton, Massachusetts. His grave can be found in the Pine Grove section, grave 821.
