Studied at Blackrock College, Company Dublin. Took up journalism and politics after leaving College and became prominent in Dublin as a strong Temperance advocate and supporter of the Irish Language Movement.
Elected Urban Councillor and Poor Law Guardian, 1902. Chairman of the National Holiday Committee, Dublin, 1903. Contested South Dublin, 1906.
Toured the United States on behalf of the Home Rule cause, 1906-1907. Member of Parliament (National) North Galway since 1906.
