In 1976-1978 Richard attended Denison University. Then he received a B.A. at Boston University and an M.A.T. at the University of Pittsburgh.
Richard worked as a professional boxer, then he was appointed a teacher of English as a second language and adjunct teacher of journalism and composition until 1992. He worked for the U.S. Department of Defense as an English teacher at dependents’ schools in Belgium and South Korea. He was also a high school teacher in Newport and Merrimack, and also worked as assistant college baseball coach.
According to his words, he devotes to “teaching of Krishnamurti.”

On July 5, 1986, Richard married a singer Mary Sue Buckley, and they have two children: Katherine Nicole and Evelyn Frances.
