He was named basketball Most Valuable Player three years at his high school in Hollister, California, and started his schooling at Brigham Young University (Brigham Young University) on an athletic scholarship. After returning from his mission, Maynes resumed school at Brigham Young University. Maynes graduated from Brigham Young University in 1974 with a Bachelor of Surgery in business management and a double minor in economics and accounting. He then entered the American Graduate School of International Management (today known as the Thunderbird School of Global Management), earning an Master of Surgery in international management in 1976.
