Aide-de-camp to G.O.C. 5th Div. S.A.F.F.; relief of Ladysmith. Present at Spion Kop, Vaal Kranz, Tugela Heights, Pieters Hill.
Twice wounded, once severely. Horse shot under him twice (despatches thrice, Queen’s medal, 3 clasps, King’s medal, 2 clasps, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order). Chief Instructor School of Gunnery, 1904-1908.
