Richard Kendall was born in 1946.

Education

Kendall attended the Manchester School of Art in 1965-1966 and the Central School of Art and Design in 1966-1969. He also graduated from Courtauld Institute of Art as a Master of Arts in 1971.

Career

Richard Kendall is an art authority who is known for his considerable expertise in the works of Impressionist painters such as Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, and Edgar Degas. Kendall has particularly specialized in Degas’s art, about which he has published several volumes. Among Kendall’s earliest books on Degas is Degas by Himself: Drawings, Prints, Paintings, Writings, which incorporates a range of works in portraying the great painter.

In Dealing with Degas: Representations of Women and the Politics of Vision, Kendall collects essays providing feminist perspectives on Degas’s art.

An ensuing volume, Degas Landscapes, examines some of Degas’s less popular paintings and indicates the means by which the artist, despite proclaiming his lack of affinity for the genre, nonetheless proved unique and accomplished within it. Among Kendall’s other writings on Degas is Degas: Beyond Impressionism, a volume concerning the later works of the celebrated Impressionist.

• Richard Kendall is a talented specialist who was highly praised for his extensive work in the field of art. He is one of the leading specialists working today on the art of Edgar Degas, and over the past two decades has organized the exhibitions Degas: Images of Women in 1989; Degas Landscapes in 1993; Degas and the Little Dancer in 1998; Degas: Beyond Impressionism in 1996; and with his wife, Jill DeVonyar, Degas and the Dance in 2002-2003. In 2010, he organized Picasso Looks at Degas with Elizabeth Cowling.
