(Trees are vital without them we simply wouldn't be here. ...)
Trees are vital without them we simply wouldn't be here. Not only essential, they have been an inspiration throughout our history. In breathtaking photographs and stories we are taken on a journey from the boreal forest at the edge of the Arctic to the rainforests girdling the planet; from ancient bristlecones to fresh-leaved seedlings; from the charming and familiar to the scary and rare. An elegantly written and highly accessible text is complemented by an extraordinary collection of images created by some of the world's leading nature photographers.

Based on poem by Richard Lewis and illustrated by children from New York City public schools, The Bird of Imagining was inspired by a bird's ability to fly - and our ability to imagine. The luminous drawings were created as part of Richard Lewis's work with children in public schools as they listened to his poem and drew the birds of their imagination evolving into the unique qualities of how and why we imagine.

( In the history of cooking, there has been no more chall...)
In the history of cooking, there has been no more challenging environment than those craft in which humans took to the skies. The tale begins with meals aboard balloons and zeppelins, where cooking was accomplished below explosive bags of hydrogen, ending with space station dinners that were cooked thousands of miles below. This book is the first to chart that history worldwide, exploring the intricacies of inflight dining from 1783 to the present day, aboard balloons, zeppelins, land-based aircraft and flying boats, jets, and spacecraft. It charts the ways in which commercial travelers were lured to try flying with the promise of familiar foods, explains the problems of each aerial environment and how chefs, engineers, and flight crew adapted to them, and tells the stories of pioneers in the field. Hygiene and sanitation were often difficult, and cultural norms and religious practices had to be taken into account. The history is surprising and sometimes humorous—at times some ridiculous ideas were tried, and airlines offered some strange meals to try to attract passengers. It’s an engrossing story with quite a few twists and turns, and this first book on the subject tells it with a light touch.

(One of the world's most famous business leaders (and a we...)
One of the world's most famous business leaders (and a well-known avian fanatic) explores the pioneers of flight. Bestselling author and billionaire entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson has always been obsessed with the skies. To promote a new Virgin Airlines route, he became the first man to water ski behind a blimp. His Virgin Galactic venture will soon offer ordinary people the opportunity to experience spaceflight aboard the first commercial spaceliner, SpaceShipTwo. In Reach for the Skies, Branson examines the history of aviation over the last two hundred years, putting the spotlight on trailblazers such as: *Tony Jannus, who made the first ever commercial flight over Tampa Bay, Florida, in 1914. *Leo Valentin, the "bird man" who jumped from 9,000 feet wearing a pair of wooden wings in the 1950s. *Steve Fossett, who broke 130 world records in planes, balloons, and airships. The pioneers of flight-not just the world-famous Wright Brothers, but also lesser known visionaries and dreamers-made it possible for any of us with the desire and the commitment to reach for the skies ourselves.

"I was enchanted by this beautiful, thoughtful book which evokes the mystery of child life as few have. The discernment, the delicate fingering of these reflections bring to us the wellspring of early imagination without hammering home any message, except that of honoring a child's thought."--Seonaid M. (In Eskimo, the words meaning "to make poetry" and "to Bre...)
In Eskimo, the words meaning "to make poetry" and "to Breathe" derive from anerca, "the soul." A poem is words infused with breath, and making poems is as basic to life as eating or hunting. The poems themselves are regarded as unimportant - outpourings of the moment, discarded once they've been used. Since the Eskimo saw no need to save poems, it is fortunate that anthropologists and explorers who visited the Arctic in the last hundred years wrote many of them down, From this material Richard Lewis has selected 90 representative poems: magical chants, lullabies, songs to bring luck while hunting, songs to taunt enemies. Anthropologist Edmund Carpenter's fascinating introduction describes the people, their beliefs, and their ways of forming poetry. Bold graphic illustrations by Oonark complete this beautiful and significant book.

In this unique collection, Richard Lewis has gathered some of the poignant and insightful ways children have viewed not only the many pleasures of their own playing, but the very life of play as it takes place within the natural world and the universe at large. Selected from the results of an Arts and Education project of the Touchstone Center, these vibrant, poetic writings and artwork reinforce, once again, the necessity of play as a cornerstone of childhood - and the gift of every child to use their playing to shape their world - with imaginative artistry, freshness and exhilaration.

In Trickster Makes This World, Lewis Hyde brings to life the playful and disruptive side of human imagination as it is embodied in trickster mythology. He first visits the old stories--Hermes in Greece, Eshu in West Africa, Krishna in India, Coyote in North America, among others--and then holds them up against the lives and work of more recent creators: Picasso, Duchamp, Ginsberg, John Cage, and Frederick Douglass. Twelve years after its first publication, Trickster Makes This World--authoritative in its scholarship, loose-limbed in its style--has taken its place among the great works of modern cultural criticism. This new edition includes an introduction by Michael Chabon.
