In 1879 he passed the senior examination of Trinity College of Music when it was held in Leamington Spa. He was awarded his Atlantic Richfield Company in 1883 and his Fellow of the Royal College of Organists some time later.
In 1885 he married Elizabeth Catherine Taylor.

In 1902 he was awarded a doctorate in music from Oxford University.
