A highly regarded historian and biographer and a gifted novelist and playwright, Richard Marius gives us a dazzling portrait of the German reformer--his inner compulsions, his struggle with himself and his God, the gestation of his theology, his relations with contemporaries, and his responses to opponents. Focusing in particular on the productive years 1516-1525, Marius' detailed account of Luther's writings yields a rich picture of the development of Luther's thought on the great questions that came to define the Reformation.

1989As a young man, Marius attended daily Christian services and carried a Bible with him in college. He even felt a calling to be a minister, earning a divinity degree. But he grew increasingly skeptical of religion and lost his faith in his 20s, even though he would devote much of the rest of his life to studying Reformation-era Christianity.
Richard Marius was an outspoken critic of the Vietnam War. He also organized protests against the Vietnam War, as well as against the Ku Klux Klan. In 1970, right after the Kent State shootings, Marius organized a protest at Billy Graham evangelistic crusade rally in the university's football stadium.
Quotations: "Here is a lesson to brand in fire across any young historian's mind: If you try to do too much, you will not do anything."
Richard Marius married Lanier Smythe in 1970. The marriage produced a son.
