From 1942 to 1949 Richard maintained his own studio in Richmond. From 1949 to 1950 he worked with Victor Keppler. In a yeasr he became a staff photographer for Life. He held this position until 1954. In 1954 he became a original staff for Sports Illustrated. He worked there until 1958. From 1958 to 1970 Richard worked as a contract photographer for Time-Life.
