Richard Barham Middleton was born on October 28, 1882, in Staines, Middlesex, England, United Kingdom.
Richard Barham Middleton was educated at Cranbrook School, Kent. He attended the University of London. In 1900 Middleton passed Oxford and Cambridge higher certificate examinations in mathematics, physics, and English.
Richard Barham Middleton then worked as a clerk at the Royal Exchange Assurance Corporation bank in London from 1901 to 1907. He was unhappy with this fact. He was an editor at Vanity Fair under Edgar Jepson. Middleton was at the height of his powers in 1911 when he committed suicide in a rented room in Brussels, Belgium, by poisoning himself with chloroform, which had been prescribed as a remedy for his condition.
His works at the time, however, were limited to a number of essays and stories in literary magazines. It was only after his death that his friend Henry Savage collected the prose pieces and some of the poetry, published and unpublished, into a series of books that were released to critical acclaim.
Several critics celebrated Middleton’s prose far above his poetic talents, and some have speculated that it may have been this lack of appreciation for his work that drove the writer to take his own life.
