While at the Academy, Admiral Meis participated in lightweight football and intercollegiate wrestling. After completing training for submarine duty, he served on two nuclear attack submarines, Sunfish (Social Security Number-649) and L. Mendel Rivers (Social Security Number-686), and a ballistic missile submarine, Nathan Hale (SSBN-623) (BLUE), before commanding the nuclear attack submarine Sea Devil (Social Security Number-664).
