Richard Mulcaster was born at Carlisle, Cumbria, United Kingdom in 1532.
He attended Eton and Cambridge, and graduated from Oxford University in 1556.
Appointed in 1561 as headmaster of the Merchant Taylor's School, London, he resigned in 1586 to serve as headmaster at St. Paul's School, 1588-1596. But he was reengaged as an examiner by the Merchant Taylors' School. Mulcaster was responsible for many changes in the curriculum there, introducing the study of drawing, music, and the drama. He also stressed the value of proper physical surroundings for the students, insisting on proper ventilation, lighting, and playgrounds. Among the first to advocate coeducational schools, he also recommended the establishment of training colleges for teachers. Mulcaster believed that all pupils should be grounded in the English vernacular before beginning the study of Latin, which had held a preferred position in the curriculum. He was author of Positions . .. Necessarie for the Training Up of Children, 1581; and The First Part of the Elementarie, 1582.
