Newman earned a diploma in painting from Cleveland (Ohio) Institute of Art (1960) and a BFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (1962). He then took an MFA from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York (1964).
Since 1965 Newman has been chairman of the Art Department and the Creative Arts Division at Bradford College, Bradford, Massachusetts. Previous to that he was an art instructor at University of Washington, Seattle (1964-65). He is interested in exploring the relationship of photography with painting and sculpture processes.
