Prior to this he served as the chief physical therapist for the United States Navy. He has also served as the president of the Institute of Clinical Electrophysiology and as president of the American-Ken Rehabilitation Association operating in Kenya. He has also been an advisor to Operation Smile International and Vice Chairman of the Board of Reach the Children.
Nielsen received a Bachelor of Surgery in zoology from Brigham Young University and a Bachelor of Surgery in physical therapy from the University of Utah.
He has a Masters in neuro-kinesiology from the University of Washington and a Doctorate in Health Sciences from the University of Saint Augustine. Besides his work with Reach the Children, Nielsen also founded another charitable organization called World of Difference.
Nielsen is a Latter-day Saint. Among other callings in the church, he has served in the presidency of the Chesapeake Virginia Stake.
