Richard Gittings Parry was born on July 6, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. He is a son of Norman Gittings Parry, a general surgeon, and Lillian (Koudelka) Parry, a registered nurse.
Parry received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Illinois in Chicago, in 1966.
Parry began his career at Johns Hopkins University, working there as a surgery intern and junior resident for 2 years from 1966. He then moved to Boston City Hospital, becoming a surgery resident, staying there till 1972. After that Parry served as a lieutenant commander and surgeon at the United States Navy, for 2 years from 1972. He worked at Harvard Medical School in Cambridge, as a plastic and reconstructive surgery resident, from 1974 till 1976. The next 2-years period of time he spent at Lahey Clinic (now Lahey Hospital & Medical Center), holding a position of a plastic and reconstructive surgeon as well. Parry then worked as a private practitioner in Fairbanks, Alaska, for almost twenty years from 1978.
In addition to his career as a surgeon, Parry is engaged in writing. His first novel, Ice Warrior, appropriately set in Alaska, is about Rick Benson, a plastic surgeon, former Navy SEAL, and Vietnam veteran who becomes embroiled in a mystery.
Another of Parry’s novels, The Winter Wolf: Wyatt Earp in Alaska, launches the author’s three-part series which addresses Wyatt Earp’s adventures and life in that state following his departure from Tombstone. Melding fiction with actual events and historical figures, The Winter Wolf is based on the fact that the famous ex-marshal and his wife moved to Alaska to seek their fortune during the Gold Rush. A reviewer for Publishers Weekly called The Winter Wolf a “fast-moving, appealingly offbeat western” and commended Parry’s skillful evocation of the era and locale. Parry’s another books include The Wolf's Cub, The Wolf's Pack, That Fateful Lightning: A Novel of Ulysses S. Grant and Trial by Ice: The True Story of Murder and Survival on the 1871 Polaris Expedition.
Parry is also a contributor to professional and medical journals, including American Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Alaska Journal of Medicine. He is the author of several medical texts.
