(Low molar mass organic materials and polymers exhibit a r...)
Low molar mass organic materials and polymers exhibit a range of physical properties that are dependent on their ability to undergo self organisation. The degree and extent of the molecular organisation depends on a complex interplay of inter and intra molecular interactions. Polymer Structure Characterization: From Nano to Macro Organization discusses in a systematic fashion the way in which molecular interactions influence observed morphologies. Topics include: organic crystals, liquid crystals, plastic crystals, polymer morphology, polymer crystallization, amorphous glassy materials, polymer surfaces, polymer phase separation and structure, and a brief introduction to organisation in naturally occurring materials. This textbook is primarily aimed at polymer and material scientists but would also be of interest to chemists and physicists studying the properties of organic materials. It provides complimentary material for a range of courses in materials science, molecular chemistry and chemical physics.

(Polymers and composites are widely used for a range of ap...)
Polymers and composites are widely used for a range of applications in engineering and technology. Selecting the correct material which is fit for purpose is a critical decision faced by engineers and scientists who do not necessarily have an in-depth knowledge of the chemistry or physics of polymers. This text book provides a practical insight into the factors which influence the performance of a polymer or composite allowing informed selections to be made. It is the result of thirty years of teaching polymer science and technology to engineers and scientists and provides a solid foundation from which more advanced study may be developed. The book complements introductory courses on polymers and composites, but also contains specialist material on the chemistry and physics of polymers appropriate for scientists seeking a general knowledge of polymer science. The production of articles from thermoplastics and thermoset resins is considered with respect to the vital issue of fabrication method and a broad appreciation of the use and application of polymers is provided by considering polymers as adhesives, in medical applications and in the fabrication of semiconductor circuits. Also included are the important topics of adhesion, fatigue, viscoelasticity, basic composite design, theoretical description of polymers, polymer synthesis and characterization.

Pethrick was born on October 26, 1942, in Yate, England; the son of Arthur Tilton Avery and Lavinia Mary (Cowles) Pethrick.
Pethrick received an honorary degree of Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of London in 1966. Three years later he was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree and a Doctor of Science degree in 1981 from the University of Salford.
Pethrick began his career as a lecturer at the University of Strathclyde in 1970. Eight years later he took a position of a senior lecturer at the same university. Scotland. In 1981, Richard held the position of a reader at that university.
Since 1983, Richard has been a professor of polymer science at the University of Strathclyde. He was a visiting professor at the University of Punjab in 1979-1980.
