In 1972 Richard graduated in biology at Harvard University with "magna cum laude". In 1976 he earned the title Doctor of Philosophy in botany at Duke University.
After working in various countries and universities, he has taught at Boston University since 1998. He is considered a co-founder of Scientific Conservation Biology. Decisive for this was his book Essentials of Conservation Biology.
Richard's main research topics are biodiversity, rarity, fragmentation of habitats, conservation strategies, facilities and the planning and management of protected areas.
Primack works in his work on the idea of a holistic and sustainable nature conservation. With the objective of preserving ecosystems, he uses in his research and teaching the findings of ecology, behavioral biology, biogeography, genetics and other areas of the ecological sciences.
On March 8, 1983, Richard married Margaret Huong, and they have two children: Daniel Herschel and William Earl.
