He was educated at Eton College in Eton, United Kingdom.
Byron was Aide-de-Camp to the Governor of Bombay between 1921 and 1922, and Military Secretary to the Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief of New Zealand in 1937. He fought in the Second World War. He was Lieutenant-Colonel of the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards in 1941.
He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (Defence Science Organisation) in 1944.
