Rogel was born on March 23, 1949 in Essex, New Jersey, United States; the son of Max and Terese Rich (Grosman) Rogel.
Rogel received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business in 1970. He received an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from the University of Michigan in 2009.
Rogel began his career as a management consultant at Arthur Young & Co. in 1970 and held it for a year. In 1972, he was appointed a corporate finance associate at Burnham & Co. Then in 1973, Richard took a position of a treasurer at Seligman & Associations, where he worked until 1974.
Also he served as a chief executive officer at Suburban Medical Center. In 1982, Rigel founded Preferred Provider Organization of Michigan. The same year he became a chief executive officer at the same organization and held it until 1997. Richard went on to succeed as an investor; and now is involved with a number of startup companies.
He served as a director of Q Interactive Inc. from 1996 to 2005. In 1998, Rogel took the same position of iMall Inc. Then in 2003, he was appointed a director of Origen Financial Inc. where he worked until 2012. In 2007, Richard became a director of Boise, Inc. In addition, he held the same position at Quelsys and Viewpoints Network, LLC.
Nowadays he is a president of Tomay Inc. Richard has been the angel investor for Coolsavings.com, Geneworks and Inergi LLC.
Rogel was a chair of the UMHS (University of Medicine and Health Sciences) Victors for Michigan Campaign, vice chair of the Victors for Michigan Campaign and chair of Campaign Fundraising for scholarships across the university. He serves on the National Advisory Board of the University of Michigan Frankel Cardiovascular Center and Comprehensive Cancer Center's Pancreatic Cancer Board of Directors. Also Richard serves on the President's Advisory Group and the Provost’s Advisory Committee. He is a former president of the Alumni Association.
Richard and his wife are generous supporters of U-M (University of Michigan), U-M Health System, U-M Medical School and numerous programs across the university, including the Office of Financial Aid, the Ross School and the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies in LSA.
On June 15, 1986 Richard Rogel married Susan P. (Ross) Rogel. They have three stepchildren.
