He was trained for professional practice at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and in Europe.
After returning to the U. S. began work in the Brookline office of H. H. Richardson.
In 1890 Mr. Schmid launched his career in Chicago, and carried on work in partnership with Harris H. Huehl until the latter's death in 1918, subsequently organized his own firm, R. G. Schmid & Company which was succeeded by Schmid & Ryan in 1927. Among the important works designed by Mr. Schmid during his association with Harris Huehl was the Medina Temple in Chicago, a noteworthy structure. It was followed by the Syria Mosque in Pittsburgh, Pa., the Masonic Temple in Allentown, Pa., in 1922; Scottish Rite Cathedral, Newcastle, Pa., 1923 and other buildings of the same character at Kenosha, Wis., and Elizabeth, N. J.
He was elected to the American Institute of Architects in 1917.
