This study of exemplary writings from the debates over the ratification of the 1787 Constitution deals with the American constitutional founders' understandings of citizenship and civic virtue. Sinopoli analyzes the development of a distinctly liberal political psychology from its origins in John Locke, Adam Smith and David Hume through the American founding, and traces its implications for the current American polity.

Richard C. Sinopoli was born on August 29, 1956, in Yonkers, New York, United States. He was a son of Joseph Sinopoli and Flavia Marie Sinopoli. Also, Richard had two sisters — Carla Sinopoli and Flavia Sinopoli, and two brothers — Gregory Sinopoli and Joseph Sinopoli.
Sinopoli earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the State University of New York at Binghamton. Later, he received a Master of Arts degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from New York University.
Before joining the University of California, Davis, as a Professor of Political Science in 1988, Richard worked as a program officer at the Twentieth Century Fund in New York City. In 1997, Sinopoli was named a Chair of the Department of Political Science at the University of California, Davis. The same year, in 1997, he died accidentally, while on vacation.
Richard Sinopoli was a renowned Professor of Political Science and author of several books. Also, he gained prominence as a political theorist. His two books, "The Foundations of American Citizenship: Liberalism, the Constitution and Civic Virtue" (1992) and "From Many, One: Readings in American Political and Social Thought" (1996) were highly estimated.
Richard received the Leo Strauss Award for the best political theory dissertation in 1987 and his book, "The Foundations of American Citizenship: Liberalism, the Constitution and Civic Virtue", won the Best Book Award from the American Political Science Association in 1992.
