Background
He was born at Egham in Surrey, and after working in a printing house arrived in New South Wales in 1851, where he joined the Sydney Morning Herald.

Career
He left the Herald in 1861, and around 1862 married Louise Whitehouse at Grafton. They had no children. In 1886 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the member for Wollombi.
He represented the seat, generally as a Protectionist, until 1894, when it was abolished and he transferred to Northumberland.
He was defeated in 1895 but elected again in 1898. Stevenson died at Putty in 1899.
