He was preacher at the Rolls Chapel from 1736 to 1757, Canon of the fourth stall at Street George"s Chapel, Windsor Castle from 1742 to 1749, and vicar of Twickenham from 1749. He became Bishop of Peterborough in 1757 through the influence of William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire, briefly Prime Minister. Horace Walpole, who disliked him, said he lacked ability, save "a sonorous delivery and an assiduity of backstairs address".
He transferred allegiance to John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute.
