Studied at Aberdeen University. Master of Arts 1806; 1st class Honours Mathematics. 2nd class Classics; Fullerton Mathematical Scholar.
1867; Honourable Doctor of Laws 1898.
Entered Bengal Civil Service, 1869, retired 1899. Served as a political officer with following frontier expeditions, viz. Jowaki, 1877-1878; Mahsud Waziri, 1881.
Samana (Miranzai), 1891 (medal and two clasps). And Isazai(Black Mountain),1892. Also as chief of the political staff with the Tirah Expedition against the Afridis and Orakzais, 1897-1898 (medal and two Masps).
Was appointed ori a special mission to the Kurram Valley, 1888. Commissioner of the Peshawar Division, 1891. Commissioner for Delimitation of parts of the Indo - Afghan Boundary, 1894-1895 and 1896-1897. Cartulary-register 1897.
