West was the son of Richard West (died 1642), yeoman of Haslemere, Surrey and his wife Alice Sturt.

He was baptised on 17 January 1636. This included considerable property in Haslemere, as well as at Roundhurst where he lived. He was commissioner for assessment for Surrey from August 1660 to his death.
West died at the age of 38, and was buried at Haslemere under a Latin inscription.
West married Eleanor Westbrooke daughter of Caleb Westbrooke of Witley, Surrey on 29 September 1653. His widow died on 21 August 1699.
In 1660, he was elected Member of Parliament for Haslemere in the Convention Parliament.
