Enlisted as private Company K, 1st Pennsylvania Infantry, December 16, 1846. Participated in siege of Vera Cruz. Second lieutenant infantry, February 18, 1847, promoted through grades to colonel Artillery, February 22, 1869.

Brigadier general adjutant general, June 15, 1880. Retired May 28, 1889. Bvtd. First lieutenant, September 13, 1847, for battle of Chapultepec, Mexico.

Colonel, September 24, 1864, for services during the war. Brigadier general, March 13, 1865, for services in adjutant general’s department during the war. Home: Bethesda, Maryland.
