Served on United States Ship Wilmington, during Spanish- American War. Commissioned Ensign, 1901, Lieutenant (J.G.) 1904, promoted through various grades to Captain, June. 1922. Served as Aide to Rear Admiral William S. Sims, 1906-1908.
On Staff of Commander in Chief United States Atlantic Fleet as Flag Lieutenant, and Signal and Tactical Officer, 1907-1911. Naval Attache to United States Embassies in Rome and Vienna. During World War accompanied as escort first convoy of troop transports to France.
Later made two trips as escort to ship convoys. Wounded while searching for submarines, 1918. Naval Attache to American Embassies at Paris, Madrid.
Lisbon, Portugal. In Command United States Ship Detroit. Awarded Navy Cross. Cross of the Legion of Honor. Holds: West Indian Campaign Medal, Cuban Campaign Medal, Mexican and Haitian Campaign Medals and World War Meda Commander Legion of Honor.
Inventor of various instruments used in connection with naval gunnery.
