Career
Engaged in practice of law, December 1858. Was clerk and master in equity, 1861-1862. Entered C.S.A. as First lieutenant.
Appointed captain quartermaster, but resigned, for ill health, before getting commission.
Successively private secretary to Governor Z. B. Vance of North Carolina, and state auditor, 1862-1865. Since war in practice of law at Raleigh, North Carolina President and attorney North Carolina Home Insurance Company.
Director and attorney Citizens’ National Bank of Raleigh, Raleigh Cotton Mill, Neuse River Mills. President trustees of Rex Hospital, Raleigh Cemetery Association, Rainey Library.
Trustee, secretary and treasurer University of North Carolina.
Trustee and attorney Saint Mary's School, Raleigh. Appointed judge superior courts of North Carolina, 1886, but declined. Episcopalian; delegate and member Committee on Canons in all General Convs.
Protestant Episcopal Church, 1889-1910.
Democrat; for many years member State Democratic Committee of North Carolina (chairman 1884-1888). Member North Carolina House of Representatives, 1911 (chairman judiciary committee).
