Studied at Winchester College.
After leaving school went into business in Manchester. Joined the Artillery Volunteers in Manchester as a Captain 1866, and served two years as a lieutenant in the Royal Lancashire Artillery Militia, while in the volunteers. Major, 1874; Honourable Lieutenant-Colonel 1886.
Received command of the regiment and promoted Lieutenant-Colonel and HonourableColonel, 1891.
Retired, 1909. Volunteer Officers" Decoration, 1892; Doctorate.L., County of Lancaster. Honourable-Colonel, 2nd East Lancashire Royal Field Artillery Brigade of the Territorial Army, “The Manchester Artillery”.
